Diorama Project

Term 2 Diorama Project

What are we learning about in Science?

The students in Year 3 are learning about the difference between living, non-living and once living things. They will group and compare living and non-living things based on observable features. Together we will investigate the characteristics of living things such as: movement, respiration, reproduction and growth. The children need to communicate their ideas using diagrams and other representations such as dioramas.

What have we been doing at school?
  • Students have learnt about living, non-living, once-living and products of living things. They can be reminded of these by clicking on this linkLiving and Non-living Things PowerPoint
  • Students then investigated an analysed a range of photographs of underwater scenes. Using these, they listed various living, non-living and once-living things under the sea. They can access our whole class brainstorm by clicking on this link: Underwater Scene Living, Non-Living and Once Living Brainstorm
  • Students will design their own underwater scene, adding and changing the features within the photographs to create a scene, which includes a range of living, non-living and once living things.
  • Students were shown different examples of dioramas, including the ones found by clicking this linkExamples of Dioramas
  • Students have drawn a diagram to further plan their own diorama and have written a list of the materials required for the completion of their own diorama.

What needs to be done at home?

  • On Friday the 1st of June, students will be sent home with a box, this project checklist and their planning.
  • Students will have a week to complete their diorama, in accordance with their planning.
  • On Friday the 8th of June, students will return their complete dioramas to school.

What happens next?
  • Students will begin working on the script for their oral presentation. This presentation will involve telling an audience about what they have made how they have made it and which living, non-living and once-living features have been included within the diorama.
  • This presentation will be recorded using an iPad to create a virtual tour with audio recording.
  • All dioramas will be displayed in the classroom for everybody to enjoy!

Term 2

Super Scientist
This week we are conducting our Super Scientist Presentations. Our aim is for students to develop a passion for science, while encouraging the children to learn more about the natural world. All students are to research a scientific concept or idea, and deliver this to an audience. They may choose to conduct an experiment or give a report on their concept. Congratulations to Tuesday’s scientists, you have all done a fantastic job.

WA Day

Every year our school likes to celebrate WA Day with a whole school activity.
To celebrate our extraordinary state this year, students are asked to bring a copy of a photograph that shows somewhere they may have visited in Western Australia. This must be no bigger than A5 in size. Please ensure that it is a copy, as the photograph will not be returned. Once collected, photos will be glued onto a giant WA Day sign, which will be on display for the week.
Please have these returned to school by Tuesday the 5th of June. Thank you for your support!

Genius Hour

Last week, students undertook an inquiry project about different celebrations and commemorations around the world. Students researched their chosen celebration/commemoration and presented their information to the class. Well done, Room 28 on your outstanding presentations!

Room 28's Slipper Day

Last week, Room 28 earned the whole class reward of wearing no shoes in the classroom! As it was a cold rainy day, we decided to turn it into a slipper day! We had cosy toes all day :)

NAPLAN
Well done to Room 28 students who completed their first ever NAPLAN tests in Week 3 of this term. I know you all tried your very best and I am so proud of your hard work.

Certificates and Awards

Congratulations to Sienna, Scarlet and Isil for receiving a Merit Certificate at our assembly this week.
I have been so impressed with your hard work this term. I hope you are as proud of yourselves as I am!

Leila, Anjali, Sarah, Lucy and Natalia are leading the way with all their hard work on Literacy Pro.
Between them, they have read over 60,000 words in just 7 weeks! Awesome work girls, keep it up!

Buddies

Last week, we visited our buddies in Room 4. We iced and decorated biscuits!
It was lovely seeing the Year 3s helping the little Kindies put the icing on their biscuits and read a story with them afterwards.

Easter

This week, Lucy's family kindly organised some adorable little egg figurines for our class for Easter. Thank you Jayne and Katherine for helping us paint them - they look wonderful!
Have a safe and happy long weekend everyone and don't forget to
READ! READ! READ!

Harmony Day

Last week Wattle Grove celebrated Harmony Day with a parade of students dressed in National Costume and a Bollywood Dance performance from a Year 4 class!
Students at Wattle Grove speak 35 different languages and half of them have been born out of Australia or have a parent who has, so we are a very multi-cultural school. It was lovely to celebrate this with our buddy class, where we did a Harmony Day activity and tasted some foods from other cultures.

Talk to Teach

This week we have had our "Talk to Teach" presentations. The children gave a short presentation teaching the class how to make or do something. We have learned about many different topics including cooking, craft, dance, art, language, sport, science, mathematics, karate, brain teasers, card tricks, and cultural customs.

Everyone did a fantastic job, giving and following clear oral instructions and explaining each step of the process.
Well done Room 28!
Wednesday:
Arnav taught us some 9 times tables tricks, Alice taught us how to make sandwich faces, William taught us how to shoot hoops, Scarlet taught us how to make a ninja star, Luqman taught us some cultural customs, Riley taught us how to draw a dragonfly, and Leila taught us how to ice and decorate biscuits.

Thursday:
Natalia
taught us some karate moves, Sienna taught us how do coin rubbings, Dodge taught us how to make paper aeroplanes, Shianne taught us how to make coloured bath salts, Isabelle taught us how to make bead bracelets, Ash taught us how to solve a brain teaser, and Isil taught us how to make pom poms.

Friday:
Tariq taught us how to make an owl out of paper, Lucy taught us some dance moves, Sarah taught us the rules of competitive walking, Francis taught us how to make a paper aeroplanes, Anjali taught us how to make a chatterbox, Ayden taught us a magic trick with playing cards, and Ella-Grace taught us how to check if someone is hydrated or not.

Certificates and Awards

Congratulations to Leila for receiving her Blue Certificate on Literacy Pro!

Shianne has been working hard in Sport with Miss Oliver!

Ayden, Ash and Sarah were very deserving of our first Merit Certificates for 2018.
Keep up the great work guys!

Student Councillors

Congratulations to Sarah and Lucy who were elected as our student councillors for Semester 1. I’m sure you will do a fantastic job representing our class!

News

During this first four weeks of the term, I have been very pleased with the effort made by the children to transition smoothly back into school and classroom routines. It has been wonderful to see the students of Room 28 showing initiative and independence in our classroom, and I am often overhearing comments of encouragement and praise between the children.

Thank you to all the parents who were able to attend out Parent Information Evening. If you have any further questions or were unable to attend, please don’t hesitate to come and speak with me. It was lovely to see so many parents put their hand up to volunteer in our classroom. Parent assistance in the classroom can help enrich the classroom program and the children absolutely love working and reading with parent helpers. If our class needs parent volunteers at any stage during the year I will put a notice up on the class blog and outside the classroom. Please get involved in the Principal’s Reading Program to help our class.

There have been some delays getting Literacy Pro up and running, which we are currently sorting out. I will let the students know when they are ready and able to log on and start reading. In the meantime, students can read their library books for their home reading.

This year, the students of Room 28 are learning to touch type. Below is the link to the touch typing website they are using in the mornings. It is a free website that teaches students to use the correct finger positioning and the children have been thoroughly enjoying this part of the day. I encourage children to use the typing program at home when possible, but it is imperative that they are using the correct finger positioning and not defaulting back to using their two index fingers.
*You can sign up for a free typing account using your email address if you like, but it is not required. Signing up logs the students’ points and progress, however, you can still use the online program without signing up as we do at school.

As part of Wattle Grove Primary School’s sustainability initiative, we have a battery collection program. If you have any used batteries, please send them to school with your children where they are collected and recycled.

Our first Senior Assembly will be held on Friday the 9th of March (Week 6) at 8:45am. All parents are welcome to attend.
