Term 2 Diorama Project

What are we learning about in Science?

The students in Year 3 are learning about the difference between living, non-living and once living things. They will group and compare living and non-living things based on observable features. Together we will investigate the characteristics of living things such as: movement, respiration, reproduction and growth. The children need to communicate their ideas using diagrams and other representations such as dioramas.

What have we been doing at school?
  • Students have learnt about living, non-living, once-living and products of living things. They can be reminded of these by clicking on this linkLiving and Non-living Things PowerPoint
  • Students then investigated an analysed a range of photographs of underwater scenes. Using these, they listed various living, non-living and once-living things under the sea. They can access our whole class brainstorm by clicking on this link: Underwater Scene Living, Non-Living and Once Living Brainstorm
  • Students will design their own underwater scene, adding and changing the features within the photographs to create a scene, which includes a range of living, non-living and once living things.
  • Students were shown different examples of dioramas, including the ones found by clicking this linkExamples of Dioramas
  • Students have drawn a diagram to further plan their own diorama and have written a list of the materials required for the completion of their own diorama.

What needs to be done at home?

  • On Friday the 1st of June, students will be sent home with a box, this project checklist and their planning.
  • Students will have a week to complete their diorama, in accordance with their planning.
  • On Friday the 8th of June, students will return their complete dioramas to school.

What happens next?
  • Students will begin working on the script for their oral presentation. This presentation will involve telling an audience about what they have made how they have made it and which living, non-living and once-living features have been included within the diorama.
  • This presentation will be recorded using an iPad to create a virtual tour with audio recording.
  • All dioramas will be displayed in the classroom for everybody to enjoy!
